The protagonists of these pictures find themselves in a precarious situation. They wait. They scan. Their cha- racters remain undefinded. As members of groups they loose their contour, their identity and become a symbol of a situation that promises hope for one and a threat for another.

The works of Nabil El Makhloufi mediate a restrained yet insistent mentality. They emanate melancholy, abs- traction and vastness. Their painting ist extraordinarily concentrated. Every line, every area pursues a mission in the overall composition. The "peinture" and the complexion work notedly subtle - from dry, almost im- perceptibly shaded plains, discret contrasts protrude similar to a reef. Spare dashes of colour appear exhila- rant almost like oases.

Nabil El Makhloufi was born in 1973 in Fes (Morocco). He soon started to paint and to teach art himself. In 1999 he went to Leipzig, where he studied from 2001 to 2008 at the Acadamy of Visual Arts (HGB) and was admitted to the master class of Annette Schroeter after he finished his diploma. In 2010 he was invited to the Dak’Art Biennale in Senegal where he received the Thamgidi Foundation Award.
