What depicts civilizations better than their shopping bags? Thitz covers bags from all over the world on canvas and paints over them with carefree and dense scenes. Ever new layers of paint and overdrawings in acrylic and ink create an associative network. The colors begin to glow, future, past and present merge, thousands of figures populate facades, seas of houses, bodies of water and even the sky.
We stroll with Thitz along the Champs-Elysées and marvel at the new green spaces. The fairytale prices of the street cafés immediately seem ecologically determined. New York has turned into a biomorphic urban jungle with deeply relaxed residents and Central Park resembles a Nordic rainforest. In Venice, all the museums and galleries are presenting bag paintings under the label of the yellow and red shoe, the sky is azure as always.
Shopping bags are both a reflection of our culture and a cultural artifact. Thitz recycles them in his works. Shopping bags may soon no longer exist. That is the way things are. Thitz's paintings thus take on a new dimension: in addition to their autonomous value as sought-after art objects, they also gain the aura of irreplaceable contemporary witnesses.
