About the artist: Wieland Payer was born in 1981 in Erfurt. He studied graphic design at the College of Art and Design Burg Giebichenstein in Halle and in 2011 he graduated from the Royal College of Art in London. The atmospheric density and artistic perfection of Payer's pastels refer to the art of German Romanticism, to Carl Blechen and Caspar David Friedrich. He combines this with his interest in fictional epics of Lem, Strugazki and Tarkowski.

At Photo Basel we present the small but on point curated show "Clockwork". Its about the fascinating use of space and time in the works of Hans-Christian Schink (* 1961 in Erfurt) and Hiroyuki Masuyama (* 1968 in Tsukuba / Japan).
Hans Christian Schink demonstrates the passing of time and at the same time the rotation of the earth, making visible the path of the sun through the day and over the sky in a striking and sensual way. His series "1h" brilliantly completes a hitherto unconquered chapter of black and white photography and at the same time sets standards in terms of compositional perfection.
Hiroyuki Masuyama dedicates an extensive series of works to the great romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840). From thousands of detailed photographs he reconstructs Friedrich's painting. Friedrich's imaginary scenarios acquire the credibility of photographic images. Fantasies of the nineteenth century, viewed through the eyes of the twenty-first - an exciting journey through time begins.

The opening will take place on Sunday, April 28 2019, at 1 pm in the German Naval Museum. The artist will be present.
