Hans Christian Schink from November at the MdbK Leipzig
27.11.2025 — 01.03.2026
Under the title "Über Land," the MdbK is presenting the latest series of works by renowned photo artist Hans-Christian Schink (*1961 Erfurt). The subject of the work is the landscape of the far northeast of Germany, which the photographer illuminates from different perspectives in three different sub-projects. From a visual perspective, "Über Land" is a multifaceted, contemporary exploration of the influential tradition of European and North American landscape depictions—particularly Romanticism. At the same time, the work sits at the intersection of current social debates about the transformation of the landscape in the wake of climate and structural change, the associated loss of biodiversity, and the impacts of these processes on people's experience of nature.
While his projects over the past 20 years have taken him to the most remote corners of the world, Hans-Christian Schink has been concentrating for the past few years on his immediate surroundings in the Mecklenburg Lake District. This region – shaped by the last Ice Age – is extremely sparsely populated and, more recently, characterized by increasingly industrialized agriculture. In addition to his intensive photographic engagement with the landscape, his latest work combines a natural history interest in the flora and fauna, as well as an exploration of the history of the landscape (both geological and human-made). The artist was guided by two fundamental questions: What defines this landscape, and how can its character be captured photographically, but also through other forms of expression?
Two of the three subprojects of Über Land (Hinterland and Unter Wasser) have already been published as books by Hartmann Books. On the occasion of the exhibition opening, the third subproject, Am Weg (On the Way), will also be published, featuring an essay by poet and writer Uwe Kolbe that captures the peculiarities of the place on a literary level.

The longing for stories is back. For us, the current edition of Art Karlsruhe 2025 is all about narrative, storytelling art: painting, photography, sculpture and ceramics. All of the artists presented are masters of the means of their respective medium and convey substantial content in their works. The narratives are extraordinarily multifaceted, reach deep into art history and are at the same time highly topical.

2024- short Story of all
Dear friends,
A truly rich year full of events and twists and turns lies behind us and there are reasons to be grateful.
Jörg Ernert kicked off the year in our Frankfurt gallery at Fahrgasse 17 with his wonderful show “Traghetto”, which focused on Venice and the city's artists.
Jörg Ernert in Frankfurt
A few days later, the Gemäldegalerie of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin presented the first works of art from the holdings of the Museum of Western and Eastern Art in Odessa. The museum's most important works were brought to safety immediately after the outbreak of war and subsequently to Berlin, a process in which our gallery played a small part. However, the presentation in January 2024 was only a small foretaste. The major exhibition with all the rescued works will be on display from January 24 to June 22, 2025.

In 2024, we celebrated Caspar David Friedrich's 250th birthday. Many contemporary artists have explored this great role model, but probably none as intensively as Hiroyuki Masuyama. Consequently, Masuyama was in great demand this year: he exhibited at the Hamburger Kunsthalle, the Bundesrat, the Alte Nationalgalerie and the Pommersches Landesmuseum in Friedrich's hometown of Greifswald. And of course with us.

Romanticism in Artificial Light, Erfurt
With the Erfurt show “Romanticism in Artificial Light”, we stuck to the theme and showed works by Jörg Ernert, Moritz Götze, Hiroyuki Masuyama, Nguyen Xuan Huy, Wieland Payer, Marten Schädlich, Hans-Christian Schink and Raïssa Venables.
In Frankfurt, we took up the context once again under the title “Mixed Devotions” - and at the end of June we had to finally leave the space we had occupied since 2005. The owner had sold the property to a “creative agency”, which is still not using it today.
Mixed Devotions, Frankfurt
In the summer there was a short intermezzo in the space of the neighboring Galerie Schwind (“Across the River and into the Trees” with Hjördis Baacke, Thorsten Groetschel,
Dana Meyer and Wieland Payer) and so the long chapter in the gallery's history in Frankfurt seemed to come to an end after 19 years and 153 exhibitions. Since 2005, Fahrgasse had grown into a functioning gallery biotope with great colleagues and a great team spirit, and I left with regret and gratitude.
Across the River and into the Trees, Frankfurt
Nevertheless, the new situation was perfectly fine for me personally, because the Erfurt gallery, our family, a still open building site and various art fairs offered more than enough to keep me busy. For the gallery's artists, the situation turned out to be less welcome, because fewer exhibitions naturally mean lower sales. And somehow... it also felt strange for me to be standing on one leg.
Reuterweg 71, Frankfurt
A message had already arrived from Barbara von Stechow on July 2, a photo of a shop window with a telephone number. At the end of the summer, I looked into the matter.A former savings bank in Frankfurt's Westend, on the corner of Reuterweg and Grüneburgweg, charming but challenging. Super nice landlords. Without further ado, I threw all my plans overboard and accepted. It turned out to be a forced move. My son gave up his autumn vacation together, my family showed understanding and Constance Rothamel and Grant Morton supported the project with all their might. It was touch and go several times, but then everything worked out
It opened on October 9, with highlights from the gallery program and a lavish party. The floor is new, but further renovation work and professional lighting are still pending.
Frankfurt Opening
Setup in Luxembourg, with Hiroyuki Masuyama
In November, the small Erfurt “artthuer” took place, an artists' fair that is actually taboo for a gallery, but out of local solidarity and sympathy for Michaela Hirche from VbK and her great work, we took part. It was again very entertaining and informal, but the real focus was on Luxembourg Art Week, which started two weeks later. That too is now history and Art Karlsruhe 2025 opens on February 19 - you are already cordially invited!
Art Karlsruhe, 2024

Finally, elections will be held on February 23 and I have a small hope that the problems of this country might finally be tackled. If our professional politicians continue to fail, we should switch from the electoral system to the lottery system (which has proven itself some times in the history of democracies).
But first things first: On behalf of all our artists and fellow campaigners, I wish you and your loved ones a relaxing and reflective Christmas and all the very best for the New Year 2025 - health, happiness, success, love and peace!
Our first exhibition in the new year starts in Frankfurt on Friday, January 17, 2025 at 6 pm. We are showing works by Hiroyuki Masuyama and cordially invite you to join us. The artist will be present and we look forward to seeing you again.
Sincerely
Yours, Jörk Rothamel
Already firmly planned for 2025: the annual Easter hike with Grita and Moritz Götze.
From December 23rd to January 5th we will be on Christmas vacation and our galleries will be closed.

Ladies and gentlemen, dear friends,
This memorable year is drawing to a close and Christmas is approaching inexorably. Despite all the world events, we are once again celebrating our infamous wish punch this year and invite you to take a sip and enjoy the last art acquisition of the year.
We look forward to your visit: on Saturday, December 14, from 4 to 6 p.m. in our Frankfurt gallery, Reuterweg 71.

Moritz Götze is awarded the prize of the Hallescher Kunstverein
The exhibition shows a lesser-known area of Moritz Götze's work: graphic portfolios, illustrations and books. In this specific area of work, Götze proves himself to be a master storyteller with an independent visual language. This includes graphic portfolios from the 1980s and 1990s such as "James Bond 007" (1989), "The Prince's Abduction" (1992) and "Tristan and Isolde" (1993/94) as well as artist books such as "Gulliver" (1996) and illustrations such as for Manfred Krug's 1999 volume of poetry ("66 poems - what's the point"). Cover designs for magazines and records will also be presented.Jens-Fietje Dwars on the award winner: "This is Moritz Götze's art of uniting opposites: past and present, closeness and distance, sensuality and abstraction, dream and reality, art and life - and all of this in the medium of painting that is both modern and timeless. It has wit, freshness and a rare esprit in the German art world." (2024)

Insects are irreplaceable. But their number and diversity are decreasing rapidly. In his annual exhibition “Playful? – Roulette with the insect and plant world” from July 18th to October 6th, 2024, the Palmengarten is dedicated to the ecological importance of flowers and pollinators. Along a varied route through the outdoor area, the historic palm house and the galleries, thirty-one artists illustrate our dependence on insects and plants as well as their incomparable beauty with metal sculptures, video animations, sound art, photography, painting and other media. Visitors can look forward to a unique art experience.

Manuela Sambo at the MMK Museum for Modern Art Frankfurt
Early works by Manuela Sambo can currently be seen in the exhibition “There is no there there” at the Museum of Modern Art in Frankfurt.
The museum has purchased all of the works - we warmly congratulate the artist!
Manuela Sambo was born in Luanda (Angola). As a child, she was surrounded almost exclusively by African art. In the 1980s she studied German and literary studies in Leipzig. Through her future husband, the painter Daniel Sambo-Richter, she came into contact with East German underground art. Their neo-expressive language was often based on African and non-European motifs and was open to the magical rituals of early cultures.
While she was still studying, Manuela Sambo created her first works of art, initially smaller masks. After receiving her diploma, she devoted herself entirely to fine art. She created sculptures, works on paper and her first paintings. The artist was fascinated by figures of the Virgin Mary and was interested in European art history.

Opening on Sunday, July 7, 2024, 11:30 a.m.
When the glaciers of the last Ice Age melted around 12,000 years ago and the ice gradually receded, one of countless was created in what is now northeast Germany, in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Landscape crossed by water. This landscape with the typical glacial surface forms of ground moraine, terminal moraine, sander and glacial valley is the region with the highest proportion of water areas in Germany. Rivers and streams totaling 26,000 km and more than 2,200 lakes characterize the topography.

In 2024 we celebrate Caspar David Friedrich's 250th birthday. Many contemporary artists have explored this great role model, but probably none as intensively as Hiroyuki Masuyama. Hiroyuki Masuyama focuses on space and time. He condenses their presence and flow into overwhelming yet subtle works.
For Masuyama, art is a great adventure and freedom beyond all restrictions of space and time: he shows us places where all seasons prevail at the same time. He proves that you can see something from all sides at the same time. He cycles through an entire year in one minute and lets us float freely in space.

A whole series of time travels leads Masuyama to Caspar David Friedrich. Masuyama recomposed the works of the great Romantic artist from hundreds of photographic images and allows us to experience their fascination anew in a contemporary form.

Soloshow
Moritz Götze
Ordnung und Disziplin (Rostocker Pappe) 2022, Mischtechnik auf botanischer Wandtafel, 81 x 67,5 cm, 3200 Euro
Götze describes his art as German Pop and dates its roots back to the Humanist art of the 16th century. He has created one of the most extensive artistic
oeuvre of our time: Paintings, architectural artworks, enamels, mosaics, sculptures, objects, drawings and graphics.
He created new screen printing techniques and renewed contemporary enamel painting.
Sculpture Square
Grita Götze
Tageszeiten, 2022, Engobemalerei, Hohe 50 cm, 6000 Euro
Grita Götze creates ceramics whose quality confidently transcends the boundaries of applied art: her painting is virtuoso, her technical perfection enormous. Works by the artist can be found in collections such as the August Kaestner Museum in Hanover, the Badisches Landesmuseum in Karlsruhe, the Kunstmuseum Moritzburg in Halle, the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Berlin and the Museum Ludwig.
"Anyone who wants to experience how beauty and the image of nature can mutually enhance each other in the artistic object will find fascinating visual models in Grita Götze's ceramic works. With the gesture of the self-evident, usability and decoration, vessel form and ornament are in perfect harmony in these objects."
Karin Thomas
The artist works on these vessels for weeks. They are the visible luxury of time at rest. Self-will and an astonishing degree of mastery are her unique selling points. There is no squinting to the side. This is a splendor that does not care in the least about concepts, trends, innovations and all the other current affairs.

Dana Meyer's "South Pacific Expedition" has already lasted several years. To date, it has yielded a rich collection of fictitious metal insects, which the artist classifies, stores in antiquated jars and labels neatly. She lists numerous South Sea islands as the places where she found them, dating them to the first decade of the twentieth century.
Nguyen Xuan Huy
Vera, 2023, Öl auf Leinwand, 207 x 147 cm, 24.800 Euro
One of the most exciting positions in contemporary painting is represented by a man born in Hanoi. His works are nothing less than a proposal for a new European art. He often makes his statements in the form of mythological, philosophical or literary parables. Transcending the avant-garde, he builds a bridge from classical European art to the visual culture of the present. His paintings are cultivated and at the same time unsparing analyses of the current state of our continent and its inhabitants.
Nguyen Xuan Huy was born in 1976. He studied at the Hanoi School of Architecture, at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Bordeaux and received his diploma in painting at the HfKD Burg Giebichenstein in Halle in 2003. He lives and works in Berlin.
Thitz
London Utopian Tower Bridge, 2021, Acryl und Tüten auf Leinwand, 120 x 180 cm, 16500 Euro
"Bags and acrylic on canvas" is how Thitz describes the material structure of his paintings. Vivid, tangible, immediate testimonies to a world steaming with vitality. "If you really want to paint big cities, you must not depict an imaginary city, but try to paint the perceived experience itself, with all the noises, noise, dust and smells. An infinite amount of information fits into one second of a city - I mean this city, these are my inner images," Thitz postulates.
Move to Fahrgasse 17
Dear friends, ladies and gentlemen,
We wish you all the best, happiness, health and wonderful art experiences for the new year 2024!
a few meters to the left
We are starting with a move. Our Frankfurt gallery is relocating from Fahrgasse 17 to Fahrgasse 17, so in the future you will find us a few meters to the left in the same building. And thus - as the longest-serving gallery - we will remain on this special street.
Since the opening of our Frankfurt branch in 2005, eight other colleagues have settled in Fahrgasse, with whom we are on good terms. We organize the vernissages together. In our wake, a number of restaurants have moved into the small street. It's a great place to stroll between the Museum of Modern Art and the banks of the Main. The Schirn and Kunstverein are just around the corner, the Städel is just a short walk away.
We are glad to be able to stay a little longer in this biotope. In the new space we will open an exhibition of wonderful works by Jörg Ernert. We cordially invite you and your friends to the opening with the artist on January 19, 2024 at 7 pm!
Luxembourg Art Week Review
We presented a solo show with works by Nguyen Xuan Huy. His paintings build a bridge from 19th century art to 21st century imagery, and the response was overwhelming - both from established collectors and young visitors. The two large formats on display went into an established Belgian collection, while several smaller works went to private collectors.

presents works created in connection with the Baltic Sea and brings together almost 300 works, mainly by painters from Halle, from one and a half centuries.
The exhibition project is a cooperation with the Dresden Institute for Cultural Studies and will take place in the summer of 2023 in Halle (Saale) in the Kunstmuseum Moritzburg and in the art gallery "Talstrasse" as well as in autumn/winter 2023/24 in Ahrenshoop in the local art museum and the Kunstkaten.
In the art museum Moritzburg Halle (Saale) the development from the Second World War up to the present is shown. The narrative continues seamlessly with works from the next generation in the late 1940s and reports on the furious new beginning in Halle.
Exhibitors include Grita Götze, Moritz Götze and Wieland Payer.

A new work by Hiroyuki Masuyama
Hiroyuki Masuyama's presentation “Timeskip” is currently running in our Frankfurt gallery.
It is about the artist's engagement with the phenomenon of European Romanticism, with time travel and especially with the oeuvre of J.M.W.Turner.
In this context, Masuyama has once again dealt with Turner's painting "Sun setting over a Lake".
Masuyama follows in the footsteps of the romantic painter of light and atmosphere. He recomposes the works of the great English master from hundreds of individual photos and lets us experience their fascination in a contemporary form as a lightbox.

Dana Meyer at the Kunsthalle Erfurt
The Erfurt Natural History Museum, one of the most notable German museums, celebrates its centenary this year. The Kunsthalle Erfurt celebrates with and
presents the exhibition "Reflecting Nature #2 - Artistic positions with reference to natural history".
The show uses contemporary positions to illuminate the relationship between scientific enthusiasm for natural history and art. Human eagerness to collect and taxidermy as cultural practices are brought into focus, botanical encyclopedias also (but not only) serve as a source of material, as do rare naturalia brought back from expeditions. Questions about our relationship with nature and our dealings with nature are repeatedly addressed - "Reflecting Nature #2" is therefore also intended as a suggestion to see and read what nature means to us in a new way. The Kunsthalle presents works by Dana Meyer, Konstantin Bayer, Anna Lena Grau, Gökçen Dilek Acay, Jens Hausmann, Julian Rauter and Julia Schmid.
In keeping with the centenary of the museum, Dana Meyer is showing her "South Pacific Expedition", a group of metal sculptures created in recent years: depictions of large fantasy insects that were caught on a fictitious South Pacific expedition between 1906 and 1910, classified, kept in antiquated glasses and neatly labeled.
The locations given (Sulavesi Utara 1906, Henderson Island 1909, Sorong 1906, Palmyra Atoll 1910) refer to remote places of longing, which most people only travel to in their imaginations throughout their lives. The attached dates create a further context of inaccessibility: A hundred years ago there were still paradises that no longer exist today.
The exhibition opens at 6 p.m. on Thursday 18 August.
Kunsthalle Erfurt, Fischmarkt 7
Tuesday to Sunday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m

Wieland Payer, Brand, 2019, Pastell, 100 x 150 cm
ZWieland Payer and Doris Ziegler open up two different perspectives on the motif of the landscape and enter into an exciting dialogue in the exhibition. Wieland Payer, who lives in Dresden, creates visionary landscapes as alternative designs to urban spaces, the diversity of which is demonstrated by the Leipzig painter Doris Ziegler.

Wieland Payer, Blue Fall, 2020, Pastell, 190 x 300 cm
Wieland Payer demonstrates graphic virtuosity and has a special feeling for fascinating themes. His landscapes and still lifes are largely bare of people, but covered with mysterious phenomena. Do they come from fiction, descriptions of voyages of discovery or simply artistic imagination? Payer weaves representational, abstract and metaphysical elements into something new. His ideal images show visions of another world. His objects give the impression that it is already present.
Wieland Payer, Felsentor, 2018, Pastell, 70 x 100 cm
Their unusual appearance corresponds to the fantastic character of the works: Wieland Payer works with pastel painting and presents this technique in new splendour. He succeeds in doing this through their unusual application to the large format, their brilliant mastery and careful further development.
Wieland Payer (*1981 in Erfurt) lives and works in Dresden. He studied at the Kunsthochschule Burg Giebichenstein Halle (diploma, 2009), the Accademia di Belle Arti Rome (Erasmus scholarship) and at the Royal College of Art in London (scholarship from the Studienstiftung and the DAAD, Master, 2011). Works by the young artist are in renowned public collections.

Hans-Christian Schink in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Odessa
Hans-Christian Schink, born 1961 in Erfurt Germany, photographed landscapes at their intersections of where human endeavour met its once unscathed natural conditions. He explores the relationship where a natural landscape once constituting the surroundings, becomes defined as something else, separate from its foundations and no longer part of the surrounding country. Consequentially, it is often human activity that creates this divide.
Schink’s work has attracted much acclaim, with Mark Siemons in the FAZ commenting that Schink’s works asks the question of "Can you say very little and yet say everything at once?", while Boris Hohmeyer describes Schink’s work as being "painted so strictly and beautifully like that of Barnett Newman“.

TIME TRAVEL 1817 – 2022
Friederich August De Leuw (1817 – 1888) and Hiroyuki Masuyama (*1968)
Pictures from the 19th century by the painter Friedrich August de Leuw from Gräfrath are juxtaposed with works by Hiroyuki Masuyama, who edited his photographs digitally in the 21st century.
Both artists studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. The artist, born in Japan in 1968, was looking for the same landscape models as De Leuw, which he reproduces in a contemporary manner using digital technology.
The well-known rock "Rheingrafenstein" on the Nahe served as a motif for numerous painters of the Romantic era. Friedrich August De Leuw was in this striking place to paint in 1876. At the same time, William Turner was staying there to sketch in nature.
Hiroyuki Masuyama photographed the rock from the same perspective as 19th century painters. He combined hundreds of digital photographs into one image, which, with the help of light and lightboxes, achieves a spectacular effect. In addition to the art-historical analysis of the various epochs, Hiroyuki Masuyama addresses the aesthetics of landscape. How does the emotional relationship between humans and nature differ and how does it compare over the centuries? The comparison of the two positions opens up numerous exciting perspectives and focuses on profound topics: What connects the digitally shaped people with the romanticism of the 19th century? Why is the longing for landscape and nature a basic human need throughout the ages? How does art as a medium of expression convey this feeling in the present? The exhibition provides answers that can be experienced rationally and emotionally and broaden the horizon.
A spectacular exhibit by the Düsseldorf artist Hiroyuki Masuyama in the "Time Travel" exhibition is a large wooden sphere made up of many thousands of wooden triangles. When you sit in it and close the entrance hatch, light falls inside through 30,000 small and large holes. The light inlets are arranged like the stars in the universe.

Good news for Ellen Akimoto
The work "Nighttime" by the artist, who lives in Leipzig, was bought by the Kuulturstiftung des Free State of Saxony. This is all the more gratifying for Ellen when she is starting a seven-month scholarship this month at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown / Massachusetts. Ellen Akimoto's solo show in our Frankfurt Gallery runs until December 4, 2021. Ellen Akimoto in her exhibition.

Nguyen Xuan Huy in the Kunsthalle Darmstadt
Nguyen Xuan Huy presents his epochal composition "Une journée Horizontal" in the Kunsthalle Darmstadt. It is a work presentation - only this one painting will be on display. What it is all about - in terms of content and technology. Nguyen Xuan Huy Une journée horizontal Work presentation 04.09.2021 - 30.01.2022 The composition is clearly based on Théodore Géricault's Raft of the Medusa (1819) in the Louvre in Paris. Nguyen's stage space is, however, a bit wider in proportion. Instead of one collapsed pyramid, you can see two of them. They arrange the compact tableau of 28 figures, young women and men, which to describe in detail here would lead too far. Just this much: each one seems to represent a world of its own. Each appears to have been forced into a pose, half remotely controlled, half narcissus-like, mostly self-absorbed. They all look European, but the latter may be due to the models with which the artist is used to working. At the same time, the pyramidal shape also plays with the views of the tombs of Giza, which are deeply anchored in cultural memory. A sphinx surrounded by ivy in front of the right edge of the picture literally triggers this association. But neither water nor sand, but a red and white something prevails. Embers? Does the sky just look like fire or does real fire rise in it? Vegetation, rocks, an artistic footbridge, a wooden house still under construction that could also be read as a boat or an improvised changing room, all of this leaves no indication of the scene of the event. Unlike Géricault, it's not about life or death. The seesaw on the swing is reminiscent of the pendulum on a clock. As a well-known symbol of vanitas, the fly by the Sphinx underscores the allegory of time, which one is certainly dealing with here. Compared to the figures and other animals, a lioness and two roseate spoonbills, it is oversized. A new species created through interference with nature? Or does the fly require the large format, as if the painter had seen it sitting on a reduced draft of his picture and enlarged it with this as a background? The confusing standards, the placelessness, the unclear reference to time contrasts with a feeling of harmlessness that this particular travel company conveys. Finally, different images flow together in a vision that straightens heaven and hell. León clutter

Picture of time, Annette Schröter
Annette Schröter is a professor of painting at the HGB Leipzig - and one of the most influential personalities on the German art scene. your graduates act successfully on international stages and enrich the image of the "New Leipzig School" with surprising facets. As a remarkable, critical and tolerant teacher, Annette Schröter knows how to let her students speak their own language, specifically promote strengths and accept controversies. She is committed to paving the way for her pupils in the art scene. A tried and tested means are the master class exhibitions in German galleries, through which they made remarkable debuts possible.
Annette Schröter herself, a long-time successful painter, swapped her medium for the sophisticated technique of paper cutting more than a decade ago. What attracted her to this was the challenge of achieving the complicated effects of elaborate painting with reduced resources. The first thing that catches the eye is the format, which has grown to be monumental. Annette Schröter works with patterns and contours, spaces, textures and blurring. But it also shows the real strengths of the paper cut, the linear, the ornament.
One of her newest and most current works is the “Grosse Butzemann” from 2020, with the stately dimensions of 220 x 150 cm for a paper cut. With great enthusiasm for the provocative, it addresses the social customs of our time: the building up of enemy images, the fascination for the cryptic and the subversive (the shredder strips are already built in), the game with wickedness, masquerades and denunciation. Look for yourself.

Moritz Götze - Lebenszeichen
The past year and a half have been difficult for many artists - Moritz Götze, however, won the best of time and fell into a veritable creative frenzy. Numerous paintings, enamels and drawings were created. The recently published catalog "Lebenszeichen" documents the lavish oeuvre. The new works can be viewed in our Erfurt gallery from November 13th. You can secure three particularly attractive works in advance. They are "enamel ladies" of the youngest generation. All are devoted to the elementary and emotional topic of shoes.
Moritz Götze, "Masse", 2020, email, 123 x 48 cm, 4000 euros
"Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world", Marilyn Monroe is said to have said, And this saying has probably nowhere been interpreted better than by Moritz Götze. The "enamel ladies" are elaborate to capricious to manufacture, but with the right treatment of timeless durability and beauty. First, their silhouettes are cut from sheet steel, deburred and pretreated. After an immersion bath in the basic enamel color, they receive their first firing at around 800 degrees. The paint melts and covers the metal ground with a glass-like layer.
Moritz Götze, "He has the floor full of sculptures", 2020, enamel, 123 x 48 cm, 4000 euros
Now the artist can begin his actual work. The painting is applied in several layers, in between firing again and again at the appropriate temperature for the respective color. Corrections are almost impossible, the artist not only has to know exactly how he is painting, but also meticulously observe the technologically necessary sequence. The "enamel ladies" have a special charisma, they combine the suggestive power of painting with the direct effect of sculptures.

One of the most exciting positions in contemporary German painting is represented by a man born in Hanoi. His works are nothing less than the proposal for a new European art that overcomes the ideological aberrations of the 20th century and leaves the fetish of the avant-garde behind.
To an art that shows the way in a new enlightenment. For half a millennium - from the Renaissance to the Impressionists - European painting told stories, parables and legends. On the eve of the First World War, when Europe began to break up, the “avant-garde”, the artistic snapshot, took center stage, the shock, the emotional overwhelming. Narrative painting lost its meaning.
The longing for stories is back. The formal demands of the young audience are high - the flood of images and data from digitization sets standards. When “digital natives” encounter Nguyen's works, they are fascinated. “Painted everything? By hand?? How does that work ??? ”When young recipients turn to the content of his painting, they are surprised and captivated.
The stories are extraordinarily multi-faceted, go deep into art history and are brand new at the same time. Nguyen looks at the present from an Enlightenment perspective. Logical analyzes are more important to him than ideological standpoints. He often makes his statements in the form of mythological, philosophical or literary parables. This painting is a cultivated and acuensionslos.
Nguyen Xuan Huy was born in Hanoi in 1976. He studied at the Hanoi School of Architecture, at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Bordeaux, and in 2003 obtained his painting diploma from the HfKD Burg Giebichenstein in Halle. He lives and works in Berlin.

BAG TO THE ROADS, Roadshow with Thitz
Metropolises all over the world, enlivened by many people - all without masks! The works of the artist Thitz have always represented a mixture of ideal and utopia, a brightly colored and cheerful world in a (slightly) improved today or a lively tomorrow. In view of the current situation, Thitz ‘works have become images of longing that inspire courage.
But - how do the paintings come to you at the moment? You can of course take a virtual look at the new works on our website. But that does not replace the presence: Art Karlsruhe does not take place this year and unfortunately we are not allowed to receive you in the galleries. That's why we came up with something.
In his early days as an artist, Thitz drove his work to interested audiences and organized mobile art exhibitions in Stuttgart, Berlin, Paris and New York under the motto “If the prophet does not come to the mountain, the mountain will come to the prophet”. We take up this wonderful idea and organize a roadshow!
An open-air exhibition will take place in Erfurt on Saturday, May 15th. The works will be installed from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the courtyard of the gallery and can be viewed and purchased there: Kleine Arche 1A, 99084 Erfurt.
Our Frankfurt gallery has large shop windows facing the street. We will be exhibiting the current works in the gallery on Sunday, May 16 from 2 to 6 p.m. and we will greet you outside. You can take a look or take a look from the street. If you like a work, we will take it outside and present it to you: Fahrgasse 17, 60311 Frankfurt am Main.
Thitz collectors in Baden-Württemberg can look forward to a very special service: If you purchase a painting from the current collection and would like to take a closer look for this purpose, we will come to you! Please make an appointment with us at galerie@rothamel.de or by phone on 0177 599 84 45.
The list of current work can be found below.
We wish you all the best and greet you warmly

Obituary for Erasmus Schröter
Erasmus Schröter is dead. His departure is shocking and stunned. He has rubbed himself creatively on this world and has been humanly desperate over the last few years because of its development. His oeuvre is a great, multifaceted and exciting story without an end.
Erasmus Schröter was a master of juxtaposition and the absurd. The grandiose lighting of his bunkers as well as the Goth portraits of his “Contest” series compose the sublime / archaic and the fragile / absurd into weird two-chords. Again and again he went on excursions into the apparently familiar, the over-familiar that ended in unknown strangers. Let's wish him a good last trip and a safe arrival.
Wieland Payer, "Blossom" Pricelist
On the occasion of my last exhibition in Erfurt, I dealt intensively with the forest floor still lifes of the old Dutch, especially Otto Marseus van Schrieck. In my further research in the National Gallery, London and the Galerie Alte Meister, Dresden, I was also fascinated by the lush, almost forest-like, densely staged flower still lifes, especially by Rachel Ruysch and Jan van Huysum. I was interested in the moving compositions, the strong light - dark contrast and the eerie yet seductive mood of these perfectly painted flowers, leaves, grasses and insects emerging from the darkness.
The idea arose to combine these models with a new color scheme of the pastel and to stage it spherically in a virtual light. The second thought was to set the lush splendor of the models in motion with impulsive compositions. The flowers take on rocket-like shapes and futuristic dynamics are set in motion. The special luminosity of the pastel and its fascinating materiality come in harmony with the texture and color of the motifs. The mixed technique of pastel and watercolor combines a drawing approach with a painterly result.

Moritz Götze Bernburger enamel art film
Bible words you can touch
A film by Uwe Dieckhoff
The St. Aegidien Castle Church is one of the striking buildings in the city of Bernburg (Saale). The church dates from the 12th century. In 1751-52 the nave of the old Romanesque church was rebuilt in the baroque style, later changed several times and finally stripped of almost all jewelry. The church has been renovated since 2013.
Moritz Götze was entrusted with the artistic redesign. His pictorial program is based on Genesis and the New Testament. It covers the vaulted ceiling, the base zones of the walls and the altar. Götze decided on a permanent enamel painting. With this extremely complex technique, layers of mineral paints are used to paint metal plates and each layer is burned at 800 degrees. The colors melt into a glaze on the metal, cover it and preserve it for eternity. Then the emails are fixed precisely on the walls.
The barrel vault was completed in 2013 - clouds and stars on a blue background. The furnishing of the south and north walls of the eastern nave began in 2014, followed by the artistic redesign of the altar wall in 2015. The new altar was also inaugurated with a festive service on Easter Sunday 2016. The work continues continuously.

Dana Meyer I Sculptures
Dana Meyer's (* 1982) sculptures have a timeless sovereignty. Her way of working is how bold your virtuoso is, for whom she forges her works freehand from steel without preparatory work or models. Her sculptural works are exciting, powerful and dynamic. Meyer shows against animals and people, individually, in groups, sometimes fragmented, but always haunting in the statement, realistic and expressive. Meyer recognizes interpersonal and animal figures as a partly metaphorical, partly portrait-like "physical affinity", which abolishes the clearly drawn boundaries between the two.

Nguyen Xuan Huy Art Collection Jena
Nguyen Xuan Huy Talking about Black Holes Art Collection Jena
December 12, 2020 to March 7, 2021
A catalog appears.
Graceful, naked female bodies, dancing or floating in erotic poses through unreal worlds. With dreamy, blissfully smiling or ecstatic faces, agile young people loll around on cushions, sometimes alone, sometimes as a group in atmospherically illuminated landscape scenes. The oil paintings by Nguyen Xuan Huy, painted in the manner of the old masters, are immediately overwhelming in their beauty. And they are disturbing - because the deceptive appearance quickly reveals itself and changes the mood: twisted or crippled limbs are noticed and threatening details such as machine guns, chicken wings or socialist symbols lurk everywhere. His identity is directly linked to the Vietnam War as the fundamental trauma of his origins. The consequences of the defoliant Agent Orange used by the US Army, which to this day causes numerous deformities, are just as central to his works as the socialist ideology with which he grew up in the communist country. Since 1994, Nguyen Xuan Huy has had his permanent residence in Germany and especially the perspective from the outside enabled him to artistically deal with the propaganda which, as he says, made him believe in a naive worldview of good and bad for a long time. In addition, there is an interested look in the other direction - at the tradition of Europe. Western art history inspired the painter at an early age, as can be seen in many quotes and allusions as well as his realistic, sensual way of depicting the human body. The mixing of these very different backgrounds led Nguyen Xuan Huy to see the many images in his head, despite all opposites to visually intertwine in large-scale fictions. Various set pieces from reality, ambiguous and puzzling moments of action and eerie, often dodgy atmospheres create a surreal world in which the logic of everyday life is undermined. While the usual boundaries are broken, dream and nightmare merge symbiotically. With Nguyen Xuan Huy, the Jena Art Collection presents fascinatingly sensual painting, which provokes emotional and intellectual reactions and demonstrates how the attractive and the repulsive can stimulate each other.

Excavation - Nguyen Xuan Huy
Nguyen Xuan Huy's current work is entitled "Excavation", "Ausgrabung". The eye is the symbol of perception.
Once buried, we can no longer differentiate between good and bad. Now we try to expose it again ... a Sisyphean work.Ngyuen Xuan Huy came to Germany from Vietnam at the age of 17, studied at the Halle Castle and completed a master's degree at the same art college. Scholarships have taken him to France and the United States. Today he lives in Berlin, inspired by classic European painting from the Renaissance to the Fauves, Nguyen develops image programs with high thematic density and social explosiveness. In the first years after completing his studies, Nguyen was still devoted to Vietnamese topics, but has been setting for about a decade he is critical of the state of Europe. His works are often metaphorical and take up iconic compositions: Géricault's "Le Radeau de la Méduse", Matisse's "La Danse", Goya's "Caprichos" and "Desastres", Michelangelo's ceiling paintings in the Sistine Chapel. Nguyen's paintings are constructive, vital, perfectly staged and virtuously set provocation. They differ in form and content from almost everything we know from current art.
They challenge their viewers emotionally and intellectually.

Hans-Christian Schink in Kummerow Castle
From June 20, 2020 Opening: June 20, 2020 Curator: Daniel Blochwitz This year's Provincia special exhibition combines four positions with photographs by Ingar Krauss, Ute Mahler & Werner Mahler, Hans-Christian Schink and Ulrich Wüst, which deal with life in different ways away from the metropolises dedicate. The Photographic Collection - Kummerow Castle thus also introduces the new format of an annual temporary exhibition.
The Latin term Provincia was used in the administrative terminology of Rome: here the supply of the ancient metropolis was ensured.
And while the late Latin meaning of the word is still used today in large parts of Europe as a "region" or "district" in neutral language, the corresponding German term "province" has a negative connotation here. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is such for many people an epitome of province - a near-natural and poorly populated federal state with comparatively few and rather small cities.
The youth in particular always seem to be on the go here. At the same time, the area is also a place of longing for stressed city dwellers with promises of freedom for dreams and experiments, as well as space for relaxation and seclusion. The exhibition in Kummerow Castle does not represent the province as a lost or even detached region.
Instead, the unexcited and often poetic images show one neglected, but quiet area full of potential.

Dana Meyer in Fromman's garden A project by the Institute for Art History of the FSU Jena
June 3 to July 12, 2020 | Frommannscher Garten | Fürstengraben 18, 07743 Jena | Mon - Fri: 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. The ninth Frommann's Sculpture Garden shows works by the sculptor Dana Meyer: sculptures of haunting physicality are presented on Frommann's estate. The artist creates her works in the medium of steel. She forms material finds in the forge and joins them together by welding; piece by piece, animal or human figures develop from a steel patchwork. When assembling, the artist is intuitively guided by the material. The gaps between the segments allow insight into and through the objects. The resulting permeability and the impression of fragility contrast with the solid material. opening hours June 3 - July 12 Frommannscher Garten: Fürstengraben 18, 07743 Jena Mon - Fri: 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. (free entry) The FrommannscheSkulpturenGarten is a cooperation project that has been taking place every year in early summer since 2012 between the Chair for Art History at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, the Jena Art Association and the Kunsthof Jena e.V. The exhibition is supported with the kind support of: JenaKultur, SV Sparkassen Versicherung, Sparkasse Jena-Saale-Holzland, Stadtwerke Jena-Pößneck, Thüringer Kulturstiftung.
Book launch Ellen Akimoto
Creamy Feelings Curdle Ellen Akimoto's (* 1988) painting is figurative, contemporary and captivates with its ingenuity. As Wolfgang Ullrich writes, she “not just quotes stylistic devices from the repertoire of recent painting history”, rather she puts them “into surprising, funny relationships with each other and transforms them into something new in their connection.” So change "monochrome surfaces in the style of suprematism" with a new, factual detailed realism or a "painted landscape painting suddenly turns into an abstract painting" and "merges with the face of a woman". KOSMOS OST with Annette Schröter
ÜBERSEE BOOK FROM ANNETTE SCHRÖTER
Annette Schröter cuts her pictures, works with the cutter, paper, sprays, colored acrylic glass and wallpaper scraps. Since 2015, Annette Schröter has made several trips to South and North America, including Buenos Aires, Montevideo, New York, Vancouver and Montreal. Her impressions, especially of everyday culture, architecture and vegetation, are reflected in an extensive group of paper cuts. The "silhouette", a technique that is particularly known from the 18th and 19th centuries and was often used by laypeople, deliberately serves as a contemporary artistic expression. Schröter not only explores the diverse and previously underestimated possibilities of this technology. In her work, she also questions content-related and artistic clichés that we associate with the term ÜBERSEE. This comes from a time when people - obeying existential hardship - left their homeland, but on the other hand it always stood for the unreachable distance and the exotic unknown as the goal of all desires - for 28 euros with us or at MMKoehn Verlag

About the artist: Wieland Payer was born in 1981 in Erfurt. He studied graphic design at the College of Art and Design Burg Giebichenstein in Halle and in 2011 he graduated from the Royal College of Art in London. The atmospheric density and artistic perfection of Payer's pastels refer to the art of German Romanticism, to Carl Blechen and Caspar David Friedrich. He combines this with his interest in fictional epics of Lem, Strugazki and Tarkowski.
Photo Basel 2019: Hans-Christian Schink and Hiroyuki Masuyama
Photo Basel 2019
At Photo Basel we present the small but on point curated show "Clockwork". Its about the fascinating use of space and time in the works of Hans-Christian Schink (* 1961 in Erfurt) and Hiroyuki Masuyama (* 1968 in Tsukuba / Japan).
Hans Christian Schink demonstrates the passing of time and at the same time the rotation of the earth, making visible the path of the sun through the day and over the sky in a striking and sensual way. His series "1h" brilliantly completes a hitherto unconquered chapter of black and white photography and at the same time sets standards in terms of compositional perfection.
Hiroyuki Masuyama dedicates an extensive series of works to the great romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840). From thousands of detailed photographs he reconstructs Friedrich's painting. Friedrich's imaginary scenarios acquire the credibility of photographic images. Fantasies of the nineteenth century, viewed through the eyes of the twenty-first - an exciting journey through time begins.
"The time levels merged in this way make it clear once again that art always has only one present. It's the one in which thinking about them takes place." Michael Freitag

Dana Meyer at Art Karlsruhe 2019
Our sculpture space at Art Karlsruhe 2019 is dedicated to a group of works by Dana Meyer. Since her major trade fair appearances in 2012, 2015 and 2017, she is one of the established and respected German sculptors. Several of the presented works are now in public ownership. Since the summer of 2018, the antelope group "Die Schlucht" is shown in the sculpture park of the city of Eschborn. In 2019 we will present her large composition "Schweine" ("pigs") in Karlsruhe.
Dana Meyer forges her virtuoso expressive sculptures freehand from steel. Between human and animal figures, she recognizes a "relationship" that overrides the boundaries to the animal kingdom. And she is not only a master of the great composition. In Karlsruhe, the artist presents a series of bizarre and masterfully crafted fictional insect sculptures in addition to her pig group - her "South Pacific Expedition".

Move of our gallery in Frankfurt
In 2005 we opened our showroom at Fahrgasse 17 in Frankfurt. After a loving and elaborative conversion, the first gallery of the Fahrgassen-type was born: the economic miracle architecture of the late forties shone in new splendor, was sensitively revised and adapted to the requirements of a modern gallery. The original character with skylight, canopy, brass window frame, bakelite door pull and grid frame over the radiators has been preserved. Friends, neighbors, co-worker Johanna Pahnke and especially all-rounder René from AGH helped for a perfect start. Around the same time, other colleagues launched new projects in Fahrgasse. Over the following years, more galleries settled. Some disappeared again (without trace or spectacular), but today the street between the river Main and Berliner street houses eight galleries and is a hotspot of the Frankfurt art scene.
Where art is shown, restaurateurs like to settle down - art collectors are hungry and artists are thirsty. Meanwhile, the economies are in the majority and social darwinism takes its course. Colleague Carlo Schwind has given up his generous rooms across the street and moves in our former rooms. He is allowed to, because he is the owner. We move on. We will continue to be present in Frankfurt. A temporary alternative address is found and the search for a new fixed domicile is in progress. Unfortunately, the last exhibition in Fahrgasse with papercuts by Annette Schröter lasts only a short time - it runs from January 25, 7 pm to January 26, 4 pm.

At the 2018 edition Karlsruhe Art Fair we present the installation "Ad Astra" by Hiroyuki Masuyama. It consists of the sphere "0" (at the “sculpture square”) and a one-artist show. The Sphere "0" is a walk-through wooden ball of 300 cm diameter, perforated with 30,000 glass fiber pens of different size and colour, which depict the stars of the northern and southern hemispheres. Who climbs them sees stars on all sides, as if one were floating alone in space.
We are looking forward to seeing you at our booth.

Hiroyuki Masuyama & Caspar David Friedrich
An extensive series of works by Hiroyuki Masuyama are devoted to Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840), the most important German landscape painter of that era. He recreates Friedrich's paintings anew by using thousands of detail photographs. Suddenly, Friedrich's freely imagined scenarios achieve the credibility of photographic images. Phantasies of the 19th century, considered with the eyes of the twenty-first - an exciting journey through time begins. Seeing the past in the bright light of the present, without the patina of time - the works of Hiroyuki Masuyama make it possible.

Project Space
We cordially invite you to the opening of our new project space with Emily Allchurch.
Please join us on Saturday, 27 May at 8 pm.
Galleries are tied to their artists' lists and programs. This sometimes makes a little clumsy. We have longed for manoeuvrability and want to be more flexible again - with our new project space. Freedom of decision-making and speedy implementation, that was the desire. Small exhibitions, discussion rounds, actions and work presentations apart from the series - that's the point. Be our guests.
Let's start next Saturday, 27 May at 8 pm with a small show by and with Emily Allchurch. Last January during the London Art Fair Emily appeared at our booth. We showed the Turner series by Hiroyuki Masuyama, and she said she was doing "something similar". When she introduced herself, I was delighted: Her works were already noticeable to me. I had already thought of offering a collaboration to her local gallerist, Giles Baker-Smith, and now everything went very fast and easy. Works by Emily Allchurch traveled to Germany and a group of Hiroyuki Masuyama oeuvres stayed with my British colleague.

03.03. – 26.03.2017
Tue - Sun: 2 - 7pm
Admission free
Leipzig-based photographer Erasmus Schröter is showing images from his photo series Contest in Künstlerhaus Bethanien. This series consists of large-format, colour portraits of young European men that Schröter photographed at various meetings and festivals of the Wave Gothic scene over the past four years.
The protagonists are in fierce competition with each other regarding the greatest admiration for their extraordinary appearance, aiming to provoke outrage with their consistent crossing of sexual, religious, and moral boundaries and taboos.
Pushing the boundaries with their obvious Narcissism, they illustrate the immense changes in European societies in an exemplary way.
Erasmus Schröter *1956 in Leipzig, left the GDR in 1985 and moved to Hamburg. Since 1997 Schröter has been living in Leipzig again.

London Art Fair with Hiroyuki Masuyama
Hiroyuki Masuyama and Joseph Mallord William Turner
The journeys from London to Rome
Turner's favorite themes were landscapes and seascapes, light and atmosphere being his special interest. Re-photographing these paintings is almost impossible: Nothing changes faster than light and atmosphere; and of course landscapes and cities look different than almost two centuries ago. Using an elaborate technique, sampling hundrets of photographs to one picture, Masuyama succeeded in recreating Turner's motifs.
Masuyama firmly believes in the possibility of time travel. As a Japanese, he also knows that you need a small deliberate irregularity to make something perfect. That is why, in his works, there are temporal transitions, passages between past, present and future. Seeing the past in the bright light of the present, without the patina of time - the works of Hiroyuki Masuyama make it possible.

Axel Anklam on exhibition in Till Richter Museum
The MainStage opens with Axel Anklam’s (*1971, Wriezen, lives and works in Berlin and Bad Freienwalde) retrospective Clearing, covering the years from 2005 to 2016.
His sculptures are biomorph yet abstract. Skins of glassfibre, epoxy resin, latex and carbon on skeletons of steel. The forms seem to be borrowed from nature but are never seen before; just like stepping onto a clearing and beholding of something extraordinary.
Axel Anklam in our eyes is among the most advanced and best contemporary sculptors worldwide. His international awards and exhibits speak to the attraction the work exerts. We are proud to be able to present him at the Till Richter Museum and are particularly happy that he will be present personally for the opening on April 23rd. The museums wishes to thank in particular Frisch Collection, Berlin for lending us some of their fine pieces.

#catcontent: Eckart Hahn, Georg Baselitz, Joseph Beys u.a. Kunstpalais Erlangen
8th April until 21th June 2015
Animals populate the internet: movies and pictures of grumpy looking cats or sneezing pandas are clicked on, viewed, commented and shared by the millions on social media. In visual arts animals are also everywhere. Drawn, painted photographed, recorded in stone and marble or cast in bronze, they are a recurring motif.
Starting from the central works of the municipal collection Erlangen, the exhibition #catcontent deals with the various forms of the beast becoming an image. From the representation of the animal as a metaphor and symbol to newer perspectives in dealing with digital imagery, the representation of the different aspects of the complex human-animal relationship are constantly being explored and integrated into art.
The focus of the exhibition is on works by artists who stimulate a change of perspective. Here it is not only the man who looks at the animal, but also the animal looks to the human. Animals are more than just metaphors or objects; instead they can be seen as actors who meet in worldly situations.
In cooperation with the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg and the 19th International Puppet Theatre Festival, a comprehensive show is brought to you. Accompanied performances, films, panel discussions, lectures, workshops, theatre performances, tours, and a Poetry Slam all takes place at #catcontent. In the centre is an interdisciplinary conference where the concept of animal agency is discussed, asking about the power of animal acts. A comprehensive catalogue of the participating artists and the contributions of academic support program will be presented and published.

Eckart Hahn at the Kunstverein Schwäbisch Hall
Opening: Saturday, 24/01/2015, 18 clock
Curated by Herma Walter and Peter Ege
Hahn's art shows off a most peculiar revival of the objective. It's like the boring, decrepit inventory of mimesis suddenly sit up, would run as an imperceptible tremor through the body of objectivity, as directed here suddenly the old strange life a Frankenstein monster, from which one can still expect surprises. The current surge which accomplishes this miracle, is the energy of ambiguity; the power source is in focus on the faucet surface. (Joachim Kalka)
It is the invisible fine mesh in the ground. It is the actual fungus from which one sees only the fruiting bodies on the surface. So I see my work: A web of invisible lines which are visible in the image. (Eckart Hahn)
